Malam Jabba (314 km from Islamabad and 51 km from Saidu Sharif) is the largest ski resort in Pakistan. a. The location, high in the Hindu Kush, surrounded by the Karakorams, north east of Saidu Sharif, is spectacular. High altitude and 2-3m of winter snow make it fairly snow-sure and besides the skiing there are many hiking options too. The small intermediate ski area is serviced by 4 lifts and a 35 room elegant hotel). Pakistan's only major ski area, Malam Jabba has (reportedly) re-opened. It had been closed due to lack of finance for much of the 90's. The resort is accessed by a good road and its terrain is served by two double Doppelmayr chair lifts. One of the chair lifts is reported to "seat 56" (presumably 28 X 2 seater) while the other is described as a "training lift." The resort is located in Swat valley in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Malam translates as "a grazing land" and Jabb "a village." The area receives an average of 5 meters (16 feet) of light powder snow between January and March with the average temperature hovering in the upper teens to low 20's (F). |
