For diabetics foot care and finding the right pair of shoes is should be a big issue.

Since diabetes causes damage to the feet, complications can result if the proper care isn’t maintained. Good footwear will help prevent these complications. That’s why it’s important to find the right pair of shoes.

If your a diabetic the general practitioner should be the first port of call, you may need a consultation session with a podiatrist. 

If you have specific problems with your feet, your podiatrist may give you a prescription for diabetic footwear or inserts.

When shopping for footwear, consider the type of shoe you need. Consider the terrain and weather conditions you will encounter and whether or not you will need inserts. 

Comfort and correct fitting will also depend on the socks you  wear. Be sure to choose your socks first, so you can see how your toes fit with the sock. It might be as well to remember that the foot swells during the day and especially after walking.

Shopping for footwear in person is recommended as it is easier to find the right shoe if you can try them on without guessing through the Internet or in a catalogue.

Measure your feet before you go shopping so you know which is the longest or widest. Use the larger foot to check your shoes. The shoes should be comfortable and should not be tight in some and loose in others. You should always have room to move your toes.

If you are going to need inserts try them with you and try them in the shoe to make sure they will fit well. In addition, find out how deep the shoe toe box is. 

Your shoes should feel comfortable in the store as you try them out. Take a walk around the shoe store. Remember shoes do not need to be broken in. We live in the year 2007 not the 1820 when shoes were made from dried out deceased animal carcasses.
